Cuvier's Beaked Whale Note to Cuvier's sighting: I have never observed such behaviour as seen with this sighting. Sighted ahead and then took a short dive. Appeared again off Port Beam at about 1000mts.
Active quick rolls.... tight circling and abrupt directional changes.... "energetic" blowing.... tight group... Animals remained close to the surface as they displayed these behaviours.
8 animals in this pod - One adult scarred male observed......possible juvenile seen by others.

Interpretation
Could have been some form of sparring within group... ?
Could have been invasion by another male not seen ?
Could have been some form of calf protection as others recognised a smaller animal in the centre of the pod ?

Common and Striped DolphinGeneral notes

It has been very quiet on the northern shelf and northern shelf slope for some time. This relates to the usual seasonal movement of Common Dolphin.

An ingress of Fin Whale into this area in early April has not continued. Casual data indicates this as being expected with the main seasonal ingress due as summer progresses. Fin Whale are being encountered further to the south.

On the northbound journeys patience has been required with good sightings currently taking place but predominantly close to the Northern Slope 4000-2000 mt contours.

Some very good sightings of Beaked whale species including Cuvier's and Northern Bottlenose Whale. Sperm Whale sightings overall have been good but as usual luck is required.
